John Wipp was born 1927 in Stockholm and lived in Lund from 1960. Died 1st June 2005

Studies at the School of Arts and Crafts in Stockholm 1946 - 52 and shorter periodes at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florenence 1953 and Slade School in London 1958.
Served as Acting Professor at the Royal Academy of Art in Stockholm 1968-71.
Several exhibitions in Sweden and abroad.
Represented in the National Museum of Art and Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Malmoe, Norrköping, Umeå, Ystad and Lund.
Murals in public buildings in Sweden, among them:

Department of Industry and Commerce and Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm and new officebuilding of IBM in Gothenburg.

1941-44 Educated as instrument maker in Stockholm. Bought his first box of oil colours
1946 Started evening school at the of the College of Arts and Crafts in Stockholm.
1947 Went on a study tour to England
1948 Had his debut at the Spring Salon at Liljevalch’s Art Hall
1949 After Military Service took a break in his education. Worked as decorative painter at the Oscar’s Theatre in Stockholm and participated in the design of the pavilions at the World Sport Exhibition.
1950 Resumed his education at the College of Arts and Crafts where his professor was Tor Horlin. Invited to exhibit at Vasterbotten Art Union in Umeå and participated in Liljevalch’s Spring Salon.
1951 Participated in an exhibition with God Konst
1952 Exhibits at Spring Salon at Liljevalch’s Art Hall. Completed his studies at the College of Arts and Crafts
1953 Gained Swedish Craft Union Grant. Studies stucco-lustro painting at the Accademia delle Belle Arti in Florence.
1954 Moved to Villa Thalassa in Helsingborg and participated in establishing the art school and exhibition activities run by the artist commune there.
1955 Made an album of art cards for the H 55 Design Exhibition.
1956 Had a one man exhibition at the gallery God Konst in Gothenburg. Group exhibition at God Konst in Gothenburg.Group exhibition ”New Generation II” at Galerie Colibri in Malmoe.
1957 Moved to Malmo and opened a studio at Ostra Forstadsgatan. Particiated in Nordiska Konstforbundet (Nordic Art Union ) exhibition in Gothenburg
1958 Won a Carl Larsson Grant. Maria Leander-Engstrom Grant for young artists. One man exhibition at Malmo Museum.
1959 Studied graphic art at the famous Slade School in London. Participated in the exhibition ”7 Scanians” at Gothenburg Art Hall and at Scania’s Art Union Autumn Salon. Participated in the exhibition on artistic decoration for the new County Council at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Lund.
1960 Moved to Lund and marries Anne de Laval , who has two children, Tamara and Sebastian Malmeström. Moves into Brita af Klercker’s former studio at Vastra Martensgatan. Participated in ”27 Scanians” at Halland Museum in Halmstad. One man exhibitions at Museum of Decorative Arts and at Krognos House in Lund. Scania Art Union Grant and Ellen Trotzig Grant. Travelled to Italy and Greece (Mykonos)
1961 Ester Lindahl Grant. Visited France (Normandy and Brittany) and to Great Britain. Participates in ”8 Scanians” at Svea Gallery in Stockholm. His son Patrik is born.
1962 One man exhibition at Lilla Galleriet in Stockholm. Invited to participate in the Nordic Youth Biennial at Copenhagen.
1963 Exhibition at Jonköping Museum with Berto Marklund. Invited to participate in Helsingborg Art Union exhibition. Lund City Art Grant. Lives during the autumn and winter with his family in Almunecar, southern Spain.
1964 Participated in Union of Artists in Scania´s exhibition at Lund Art Hall. One man exhibition at Galerie Leger in Malmo. Became a lecturer at Lund Technical University , Faculty of Architecture, Form and Design. Joined as a member of the artist group Inter and exhibits with the group in Copenhagen and Oslo and later at touring exhibitions in Europe
1965 One man exhibitions at Bollnas Art Centre and at Gummeson Art Hall in Stockholm. Participated in Nordic Art Union´s exhibition in Trondheim, at ”Images Suédoises” in Helsingborg, at ”Young Master Art” at Scania Art Museum in Lund, and exhibited with Inter in Brussels, Florence, Venice and Copenhagen. Journey to Leningrad with Union of Artists in Scania. Edstrand Foundation Grant. Exhibition ”Triss” at Norrkoping Art Museum with Karl-Einar Andersson and Sten Dunér. His daughter Philippa is born. Bought a house in Tolanga that has since then been used as a summer studio
1966 One man exhibition at Gallery Observatorium in Stockholm(aluminium room).Participated in ”Room for Imagination” at Scania Art Museum in Lund.
1967 One man exhibition at Galerie Leger in Malmo and Gothenburg. Participated in ”Manniska nu”(Humans now) at Lund Art Hall. Visited Tunisia. Obtained the Government Arts Grants Committees Grant .
1968 One man exhibition at Galerie Doktor Glas in Stockholm. Professor in painting at the Royal College of Art in Stockholm and director of the Monumental Art section of the Royal College of Art.
1969 One man exhibitions at Vikingsberg Art Museum in Helsingborg and at Galerie Doktor Glas in Stockholm. Scenography for the programme ”Supersession” on Swedish Television.
1970 One man exhibition at Galerie Prisma IV in Lund. Participated in ”Contemporary painting from Scania” at Sodertalje Art Hall, in ”Nordic Art Exhibition” at Hasselby Castle, in ”Nordic Professors ” at Gallery F15 in Moss , Norway. Exhibition at Kristianstad Museum with Arvid Widerberg. Travelled to Italy.
1971 Participated in ”New Scanian Art ” in Lidkoping, in ”Nordic Academic Professors” at Svea Gallery in Stockholm (later showed under different titles at Varberg Museum, Sophienholm, and at Kongens Lyngby in Denmark. Left position as Professor at the Royal College of Art and for a lectureship at Form and Design at Lund Technical University, Faculty of Architecture. Travelled to Sardinia.
1972 One man exhibitions at Konstframjandet in Malmo, the Museum of Decorative Arts in Lund and Galerie Doktor Glas in Stockholm. Collaborated with Lasse Soderberg and Werup-Sjostrom Quintet in an audio visual performance called ” Shall the game start or is it over ” at the Knights Hall at Malmo Museum.
1973 One man exhibition at Gallery 54 in Gothenburg and at Halmstad Art Club. Participates in ”Images du Nord” at Musée Dynamique in Dakar, Senegal (Arranged by NUNSKU), at ”Utopias and Realities” at Lund Art Hall. Moved to Nehrmans vag to a house that combines living space and studio.
1974 Participated in ”Swedish Contemporary Art” at Sonderjylland Art Museum in Tonder, in exhibitions against atomic energy at Konstframjandet in Malmo and at the Cultural House in Stockholm, in ”Art from Malmohus County ”at Norrbotten Museum in Lulea. Is appointed member of Government Art Council’s Committee for art, exhibitions and museums.
1975 Retrospective at Lund Art Hall. One man exhibitions at Konstframjandet in Orebro and Kalmar Art Museums (with Bertil Lundberg). Government Arts Grants Committee’s larger Grant.
1976 Chairman of the working committee for the Government Art Council conference on ”Konstnar i miljogestaltning ” Linkoping. One man exhibitions at Galerie Doktor Glas in Stockholm and at Gallery Metz in Umea and at Harnosand. Participated in an exhibition at Nevers, France and in ”the Sea” at Lund Art Hall.
1977 Participates in ”the Light from Scania” at Sandviken Art Hall and ”Thalassa” at Vikingsberg Art Museum in Helsingborg. Illustrated ”Poetry in Scania”. Retires from his position as university lecturer at Lund Technical University, Faculty of Architecture. Travels to Crete.
1978 One man shows at Lidkoping Art Hall and at Vikingsberg Art Museum in Helsingborg. Participates in ”Aura 50 years” at Lund Art Hall and at ” Scania Art ” at the County Museum of Linkoping.
1979 Participates at the Art fair in Basel and at ”Enamel” at Liljevalch’s Art Hall. Journeys to New York and to Morocco.
1980 One man exhibitions at Krognos House in Lund, at Galerie Doktor Glas in Stockholm and at the Communal Gallery in Umea. Visits to Florence and Portugal.
1981 One man exhibitions at the County Museum of Kristianstad and at Galerie Leger in Malmo. Follows Olle Kaks as Chairman of NUNSKU. For NUNSKU undertakes visits to Paris and to the Biennial of San Paolo.
1982 One man show at Ornskoldsvik Art Union at Ornskoldsvik City Council.
1983 Exhibition with Curt Asker at Gothenburg Art Hall. One man exhibition at Ystad Art Museum. Participated in ”Art for Government Departments” at the Royal Academy of Art, Stockholm and in ”Pictorial Poets-Poetical Pictures” at Malmo Art Hall. Curator for Torsten Andersson’s exhibition at the Biennial of Sao Paolo. His grand children Lo Wipp and Ossian Malmestrom Theselius are born.
1984 One man exhibition at Gallery Sankt Olof in Norrkoping. Participates in ”Black Art” at Krognos House in Lund where he for the first time exhibits his ”shapes” in painted wood. Visits Ireland and Madrid
1985 Participated in ”6 artists from Lund ” at Svea Gallery in Stockholm. Travels to Vienna and Budapest. Leaves his Chairmanship of NUNSKU.
1986 One man exhibition at Boras Art Museum, at Gallery Wallner in Malmo, at Dalarna Museum in Falun, at Art Centre of Gavle and at Gallery Ahlner in Stockholm. Participates in ”Art in the City”, a conceptual exhibition produced by Ystad Art Museum, also showed at Kristianstad, Helsingborg and at the Museum for Decorative Arts in Lund. Visits museums in Germany, France, Belgium and Italy. The grandchildren Viktor Wipp and Isabel Malmestrom Theselius are born.
1987 One man exhibition at Gallery Astley in Uttersberg, Ahlberg Hall in Ostersund and Galerie Doktor Glas in Stockholm (with Ulf Trotzig). Participated in the Leather Fabric opening exhibition in Malmo. Travels to Spain.
1988 One man exhibition at Tomelilla Art Hall and at Krognos House in Lund. Participated in AURA’s 60-year jubilee at Lund Art Hall and in group exhibitions in Montevideo and Tokyo. Visits Paris. His grandchild Amanda Wipp is born
1989 Exhibition at Solvesborg Art Hall with Erik Wipp. Participated in the 13th Baltic Biennial in Rostock and receives the Biennial prize. Participated in ”The Annual” at Wasa Hall in Stockholm. Wins Ester Almqvist Grant. Visits Egypt.
1990 One man exhibition at Gallery Wallner in Malmo.Participated in ”Then- Now/50-90” at Gallery Konstnarscentrum in Malmo and in ”Gyrr” at Den Frie in Copenhagen. Publishes his poetry collection ”Sovande Sjo”(Sleeping lake ) with Kalejdoskop Publishers. Undertakes journeys to Italy and Turkey. His grandchild Daphne Malmestrom is born.
1991 Participates in Stockholm Art Fair in Sollentuna and in ”Ester Almqvist- Grantees” at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Lund. Journeys to Ireland, Germany, Belgium, France, Italy and Switzerland. Is chosen to be a member of the Royal Academy of Art. His grandchild Leon Wipp-Ekman is born.
1992 One man exhibition at Konstforum Barbacka in Kristianstad and at Galerie Doktor Glas in Stockholm. Participated in ”Tiden ” (the Time) at Gothenburg Art Museum and in ”Graphic artists from Lund ” in Zabrze and Greifsvald. Journeys to Paris and to Provence. His grandchild Vincent Wipp-Ekman is born.
1993 One man exhibition at Krognos House in Lund. Participated in ”Flags around Kinnevik” in north Vastergotland. Visits Italy.
1994 One man exhibition at Galerie Oijens in Gothenburg and at Tjornedalagarden in Baskemolla. Exhibits at ”Gegenwartkunst aus Schweden” at Stadtgalerie in Kiel and in ”Kinnekulle Railway” in north Vastergotland. Travels to Spain and the US (California).
1995 One man exhibition at Gallery Skelderhus in Munka-Ljungby. Participates in the ”Project Aqua” at Konstforum Barbacka in Kristianstad and in ”Creations” shown at 26 churches in Skara County. Journeys to France and to Tenerife. His grandchild Sid Wipp-Ekman is born.
1996 Retrospective "Vagen till vaggen" (the Way to the Wall) at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Lund. In connection to the exhibition a book was produced on John Wipp with texts by Jan Torsten Ahlstrand and Thomas Millroth and a collection of poetry by John Wipp was published with the title ”Blick” (The Gaze), both at Ellerstroms Publishing House in Lund. One man exhibition at Gallery Bass, Kristianstad. Participated in the exhibition ”Help” at Konstnarshuset in Stockholm
1997 One man exhibition at Gallery Bergman, Malmo. Gallery Bass, Kristianstad with C.O Hultén, Bruno Knutman and Uno Svensson. One man exhibition at Gallery Persson in Malmo.
1998 One man exhibitions at large halls of the Royal Academy of Art in Stockholm and at Lund Art Hall. ”Aterseende” (Reunion), Tomarps Kungsgard, group exhibition
